University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Dallas, Texas

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, located in Dallas, Texas, encompasses 30 acres of land and is one of the world's top research facilities in the biomedical science field. DeShazo, Tang & Associates, Inc. has been the traffic consultant for the university for many years and performed the functional parking garage designs for buildings built on its North Campus. DT&A evaluated the master plan for the campus; evaluating both the existing and future transportation system, circulation patterns, approach routes/entrances/exits, emergency service needs, conflict areas, and origin/destination patterns. Existing and future parking capacity and needs were critical considerations for the master plan.

Alternatives for connecting the existing Main Campus with the North Campus were analyzed in an effort to facilitate the flow of students, faculty, and visitors to the campus and maintain a continuity that would give the illusion of a single, large campus. A busway system with a standby walkway was recommended. This "campus connector" would best address travel time, cost, accommodation of wheelchairs and carts, safety, and capacity.
