Haskell Boulevard
Dallas, Texas

It has been the City of Dallas' goal to create a "grand boulevard" (Dallas' version of the Champs Elysees) that would provide a link between North Central Expressway and Fair Park. Several studies have been performed since 1988 that focused on the social and economic potential of this rich historical sector of East Dallas and to determine the feasibility of implementing the City's goal. This boulevard would be a tree-lined oasis with wide, landscaped medians and sidewalks for bicyclists, joggers, and pedestrians and would provide automobile and trolley access. Haskell Boulevard presently has two anchors: Cityplace on the northwest, and Fair Park, which has hosted the Texas State Fair, on the southeast.

Against this backdrop, DT&A and the other team members considered the impacts this unique thoroughfare would have on the surrounding residences, businesses, and important historical institutions. The goal was to provide a smooth traffic flow for this densely traveled boulevard, minimize encroachment on the residential neighborhoods, and provide for optimal safe access for all modes of travel. This public works project will add to the city's vitality and provide recreational opportunities that will be enjoyed for future generations.
