Downtown
Strategic Public Transportation Plan
Fort
Worth, Texas
Downtown Fort Worth is an exciting
place that is quickly becoming a 24/7 destination for a number
of people. DeShazo, Tang & Associates has been involved in a number
of projects in Downtown Fort Worth during the past fifteen years,
including several parking studies in the vicinity of Sundance
Square, a study for the Tarantula train, and a public transportation
plan for the North Central Council of Governments in Downtown
Fort Worth. DT&A evaluated the bus system in Downtown Fort Worth
and transit activities that occurred there. It was found that
the primary activity in the CBD was transfers, not trips to the
CBD as a destination. A north and south transfer center configuration
was compared to only using Fort Worth's Intermodal Transportation
center in the south end of the CBD as a transfer location. By
using only one transfer center the large majority of transferring
passengers would have shorter travel times and more comfortable
facilities. Interfacing with AMTRAK, Railtran commuter rail, Texas
TGV high speed rail and intercity bus service is encouraged by
using the Intermodal Transportation Center.
A vintage trolley along Main Street
between the Tarrant County Courthouse and the Intermodal Transfer
Center was recommended to serve CBD passengers. A transit/pedestrian
mall on the north end of downtown would connect workers with retail/restaurant
areas and parking facilities on which shuttles would run. A tourist-oriented
bus and route were proposed to connect the zoo, cultural district
and stockyards with major hotels and the Intermodal Transfer Center
in the CBD.
